About Larchway
A small training operation in Toronto's east end, built around winter evening schedules and plain, honest coaching.
Who we are
Larchway started as a handful of evening classes held above a hardware store near Broadview Avenue, aimed at neighbours who wanted something useful to do on a dark Tuesday night. Six winters later it is still a small operation, operating as Riverdale Martial Arts Inc., focused on exactly three courses rather than a long menu of programs. We have kept the roster deliberately short because a small, well-run set of courses is easier to teach consistently than a sprawling schedule.
The idea behind the name is simple: a lantern-lit path through a long season, lit one stretch at a time. Classes are kept small enough that a coach notices when someone's footing is off, and scheduled for the hours people are actually free — after work, after school, after the sun has already gone down. Most students join in October or November, as the evenings shorten, and many stay on through the Long Path Program once the Lantern Skills Course wraps up.
We are not a large franchise with locations across the city. We are one address, one small team, and a schedule built around the reality of a Toronto winter — streetcars that slow down in the cold, sidewalks that need careful footing, and evenings that start getting dark not long after four o'clock.

What we do
We run three courses covering awareness, foundational technique and a longer skills path — see the full breakdown on our courses page. In short:
- Winter Commute Awareness — Practical sessions on moving through dark parkades, bus stops and icy sidewalks with calm awareness.
- Lantern Skills Course — Six weeks of foundational technique, practised in winter layers so it feels realistic for the season.
- Long Path Program — A five-month programme building on the Lantern Skills course across the full winter season.
Each course stands alone, so you can start with a single Winter Commute Awareness series and decide later whether the longer Lantern Skills Course or Long Path Program suits your pace. Nobody is asked to commit to the whole season on their first night.

Who provides the services
Lead coach
Oversees the Lantern Skills Course and the Long Path Program, with years of experience teaching mixed-level evening groups.
Awareness instructor
Leads the Winter Commute Awareness sessions, focused on route planning and calm decision-making rather than technique drills.
How we work
Approach
Classes build gradually, in the clothing and conditions people actually train in through a Toronto winter.
Quality control
Group sizes stay small enough for a coach to correct footing and posture individually.
Communication
Schedule changes go out the same day, by the group chat students join at enrolment.
